Planet
P.U.M.A. is the magazine from the Professional Unification of
Martial Arts. It is intended to inform our members about events in
the organisation, educate them with technical articles, entertain
them and help encourage them to get involved in the wider world of
P.U.M.A. It is published quarterly and from issue 12 onwards is
provided to all members of P.U.M.A. free of charge.
The
magazine has one permanent editorial staff member, however most of
the content is written by ordinary organisation members. Please see
the
Frequently Asked Questions section further down this page for
further details on getting involved.

Previous
Editions
Missed an
issue? Don’t despair. We have a stock of back issues so you might
still be able to complete your collection. Enquire at the
merchandise store at P.U.M.A. tournaments or other events, or order
through your instructor.
As a service to our members we
have now started to make older editions of Planet P.U.M.A. available
in downloadable electronic form for viewing in Adobe Acrobat reader.
These contain the full content of their printed counterparts, but
with lower resolution images to facilitate quick download.
To download an issue using
Internet Explorer, right-click on the appropriate “Download here”
link in the following table and select “Save Target as…”. This
procedure may vary slightly if using a different web browser. Apple
Mac owners should consider buying a proper mouse, seeing as
Mac OS X does actually support right-buttons on the sly.
Please write and let us know what you think of the
service, how we can improve it and whether you'd like to see future
issues made available in this format.
The magazine's design and publishing has been a
continuous learning experience for us. Please don't be put off by
the rough edges present in the first couple of editions . They still
contain loads of great articles by keen martial artists and the
later issues are far slicker.

Q: Is it just a fanzine?
A: No, Planet P.U.M.A. is 100%
official. We will from time to time run pieces from the Management
Team or Committee.
Q: Sounds great! How do
I get my copy?
A: Like I said, from issue 12
onwards if you're a member of P.U.M.A. you get a copy from your
instructor, free of charge. Additional copies may be purchased for
an astonishingly reasonable one pound each from the merchandise
store at tournaments and other P.U.M.A. events.
Q: How do I view the electronic version?
A: You will need Adobe Reader or
another PDF reader installed on your computer. You probably already
have it. If you don’t, it is commonly included on magazine disks or
is downloadable from
www.adobe.com.
Q: Why does the electronic version have lower quality
pictures?
The
full-resolution high quality files we send to the printers are big.
Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mind bogglingly
big they are. By reducing the picture detail we can get the files
small enough to be downloadable by anyone with an internet
connection – even dial-up users.
Q: Can you make the electronic version available in
other formats?
A: Errr… shouldn’t think so. If
anyone can provide a good reason we’ll certainly consider it.
Q: When do editions become available for download?
A: We haven’t
decided yet and don’t even guarantee that issues WILL become
downloadable. It won’t be less than a year after that edition’s
printed premiere so you still have an incentive to get the eminently
cuddly physical version…
Q: I'm keen and literate –
can I get involved with the magazine?
A: Absolutely. We need and welcome articles and
related material (such as photographs) from anyone who's willing to
supply them. A number of budding journalists and authors have
already worked with us. If you have any ambitions in this area
then golly, getting your work printed here might just be that break
you need...
Q: Do you have to be a black
belt to write articles, because my mate Brian says...
A: What rot. We're happy to
discuss ideas with, and publish work from, pretty much anybody
connected with the organisation. This includes new beginners,
parents, spouses, groupies... anyone. Even eccentrics.
Q: I can't write for toffee
but I'm a dab hand at photo editing / proof-reading / artwork /
washing cars...
Great, if you reckon you can
help with the practical aspect of slapping a magazine together then
drop us an email and we'll see if we can use you. Don't bother
with the car washing though, the editor uses a specialist premium
service.
Q: Mint. How do I get
started?
A: We've prepared a
contributors' guide which covers the basics – please download it
here
and give it a good old perusal. If you have any other questions, put
them to the editor at
magazine@puma-uk.com and they'll get back to you.
